A UNESCO World Heritage site on Newfoundland's west coast, where the freshwater fjord of Western Brook Pond cuts 16 kilometers into the Long Range Mountains between thousand-foot cliffs. Balsam fir and white birch on the lower slopes turn gold and rust against the bare orange rock of the Tablelands, a slab of the Earth's mantle thrust to the surface, peaking in late September and early October.
