Yabakei Gorge

Cliffs and pinnacles carved from volcanic rock line this gorge in Oita, threaded by the Ao-no-Domon tunnel a monk reputedly hand-dug in the 18th century. Maples color the ravine through most of November, among Kyushu's latest color.
