Michigan's largest state park, established 1945, holds roughly 60,000 acres near Ontonagon and one of the Midwest's largest old-growth hardwood stands. The Lake of the Clouds overlook (a sheer drop to a mirror lake ringed by turning maple and hemlock) peaks late September into early October.

Hartwick Pines State Park

A 49-acre remnant of Michigan's original white and red pine forest survives near Grayling, donated in 1927 by Karen Michelson Hartwick in memory of her husband. A logging museum and the paved Old Growth Forest Trail explain the timber era that cleared nearly everything else like it.
