Chele La Pass

The pilgrim path to Paro Taktsang climbs 900 meters from the Ramthangkha car park through blue pine and fir to the cliffside monastery at 3,120 meters, built in 1692 where Guru Rinpoche is said to have landed on a flying tigress. October's clear post-monsoon skies give the best views back over Paro Valley.

Bhutan's former winter capital sits at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, its whitewashed 17th-century dzong ringed by red and white rice terraces climbing the valley walls. The terraces turn gold through the October-November harvest, when post-monsoon skies stay clear over the valley.

A glacial valley in Wangdue Phodrang ringed by blue pine forest, its wetland floor left unplowed for the black-necked cranes that migrate here from the Tibetan plateau each year, circling Gangtey Monastery three times on arrival. The cranes touch down from late October into November, after the valley grass has cured tawny.
